TMJ Treatment Can Help Alleviate Jaw Pain

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, also referred to as TMD, affects as many as 10 million people in the U.S. Dr. Conrad C. Casler, Jr. provides effective TMJ treatment with simple, comfortable oral appliance therapy. For the right patients, these devices can help reduce joint strain, facial muscle tension, and other painful symptoms associated with the condition. At Casler Dental Group in Tulsa, OK, we are committed to providing quality, individualized dental care for each patient.

Defining TMJ Disorder

Indicated by chronic pain in the head, neck, or face, the exact cause of TMD is unknown. However, it is common for TMD to occur if the articular disc in the jaw joint is eroded or not properly positioned. Healthy articular discs allow the jaw to move freely and smoothly, effectively cushioning the joints. Various types of arthritis can contribute to TMJ issues, as well as blunt force trauma, such as a sports injury or a car accident. Additionally, patients who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) are more likely to develop TMD.

Common Symptoms

Signs of TMD can range from mild to severe. Symptoms may be brief, lasting only a day or two, or they can be chronic. Some common indicators of TMD include:

  • Chronic headaches
  • Clicking or popping sound when opening or closing your mouth
  • Face, neck, jaw, or shoulder pain
  • Difficulty chewing
  • A sensation that the jaw is “stuck” or frozen
  • Facial swelling
  • Toothache or earache

How TMJ Disorder Can Affect Your Health

TMD can have a significant negative impact on your comfort and quality of life. If left untreated, TMD can become worse over time, resulting in more serious health issues, such as:

  • Chronic inflammation of the TMJs
  • Interrupted sleep
  • Muscle spasms
  • Fractured or chipped teeth
  • Dental erosion from grinding or clenching your teeth

Customized oral appliances help many patients find both immediate and ongoing relief.

Oral Appliance Therapy

During a consultation with Dr. Casler, he will assess your symptoms and your bite. X-rays and scans will be taken to evaluate your teeth, jaw joints, and surrounding structures. After a complete examination, Dr. Casler will recommend personalized treatment options based on your particular needs.

By eliminating teeth grinding and gently repositioning your jaw, an oral appliance effectively reduces muscle strain and tension.

Many of our patients have benefited from the use of a custom oral appliance or night guard. By eliminating teeth grinding and placing your jaw joints in a more favorable position, these devices effectively reduce muscle strain and tension. When your TMJs are in proper alignment, there is less pressure on the articular discs, resulting in better function and increased comfort. Appliance therapy may be used as a stand-alone treatment or combined with other methods, like orthodontics or restorative dentistry, to correct misalignment and wearing.
