Dental Crowns Repair Teeth while Restoring Appearance
Dr. Conrad C. Casler can design and place natural-looking dental crowns at our Tulsa, OK, office to repair teeth and prevent further decay. A crown will also restore the tooth's appearance while providing improved structure and support. With our advanced technology and Dr. Casler’s extensive skills, we can design and place your crown in a single visit, rather than over the course of two separate visits. This allows for better functionality in a shorter period of time, and a great deal more convenience for the patient.
About Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are like caps that fit over teeth that have suffered decay or damage. Generally, a crown is used when a filling, inlay, or onlay is insufficient for repairing the tooth. Dental crowns are available in a variety of different materials to suit your unique dental and aesthetic needs. Common materials include gold, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and porcelain. While metal crowns typically offer greater strength and durability, they are not recommended for front-facing teeth. Porcelain crowns are ideal for any teeth that will show when you smile, as these are customized to blend in with your surrounding teeth.
Uses for Dental Crowns
If you have any of the following, you might need a dental crown.
- A tooth that is cracked, fractured, chipped, or otherwise damaged
- Severe tooth decay
- Bite misalignment
- A silver filling that requires strengthening
- Aesthetic enhancement
- To seal and strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy
- Improve the effects of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
We also sometimes use crowns in cosmetic dentistry. For example, a crown can improve the appearance of a misshapen tooth, or a discolored tooth that does not respond to teeth whitening.
How Crowns Are Designed and Placed
The design and placement process will depend, in part, on the material you choose for your crown. Metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are designed and created in an off-site lab, requiring two separate office visits.
With our advanced technology and Dr. Casler’s extensive skills, we can design a crown that blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth, offering a natural appearance.
After examining the tooth and determining that a crown is necessary to repair it, Dr. Casler can begin preparing the tooth for the crown. He will carefully remove parts that are damaged and decayed before reshaping the tooth, and potentially the gums, to accommodate the crown. Once the reshaping process is complete, we will take impressions of the tooth.
When the crown is complete, Dr. Casler will place it over the tooth, ensuring a proper fit. He will then cement the crown onto the tooth for your permanent restoration. You can look forward to restored form and function, as well as a natural-looking appearance.
How Dental Crowns Help Maintain Oral Health
Dental crowns help preserve the remaining healthy structure of your natural tooth. This prevents tooth loss, which can destabilize the nearby teeth, as well as lead to bone loss. The crown also seals the tooth off from bacteria, which reduces its risk of developing additional decay. With porcelain crowns, you can feel confident in your smile, as it will blend beautifully with the rest of your teeth for inconspicuous restoration.
